Preparatory Study

The following publications accompany Phase I of the Preparatory Study on Ecodesign for Furniture and provide supporting evidence for the development of potential requirements under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). Stakeholder feedback on these draft reports will support the further development of the study and subsequent assessment phases.

• Preparatory Study on Ecodesign for Furniture - Phase I (MEErP Tasks 1-4): Initial assessment of the furniture product group, covering scope, markets, users and technologies.
• Preliminary Mapping of Available LCA Data: Review of available environmental data and life cycle assessment evidence for furniture products.
• Digital Product Passport (DPP) Content Assessment for Furniture: Assessment of potential Digital Product Passport content requirements for furniture products.

Stakeholder feedback on the draft reports may be submitted using the feedback templates below until 3 November 2026. Completed feedback forms should be sent to the study team at eco-furniture [at] trinomics.eu.

• General Feedback Template: Covers all three reports and includes both targeted questions and a section for general comments. Completed feedback forms should be submitted by 3 November 2026 to eco-furniture [at] trinomics.eu. 
• Substances of Concern (SoC) Feedback Template (optional): Covers the substances of concern assessment under MEErP Task 4 and the related Bill of Chemicals analysis (Section 8.6). Feedback may be submitted by 25 November 2026 to eco-furniture [at] trinomics.eu.

The first stakeholder meeting of the ESPR Preparatory Study on Furniture, carried out in support of the European Commission’s work under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), will take place on 6 October 2026, from approximately 09:00 to 17:00 CEST. The meeting will be held at the Conference Centre Albert Borschette (CCAB), Rue Froissart 36, 1040 Brussels, with the possibility to participate remotely via Microsoft Teams. Registration was required for both formats. Registration closed on 21 September 2026. 

The meeting will provide an overview of the draft findings from Phase I of the Preparatory Study on Ecodesign for Furniture focusing on MEErP Tasks 1-4, and offer stakeholders the opportunity to discuss the analysis and provide feedback. The agenda is provided below.

The draft reports presented and discussed during the meeting, together with the stakeholder feedback templates, are available under the Publications section above. Stakeholders are invited to submit written feedback by 3 November 2026 using the templates provided and to send completed feedback forms to eco-furniture [at] trinomics.eu. Feedback regarding the Substances of Concern (SoC) can be sent by 25 November 2026.

A stakeholder survey was launched, with the deadline originally set for 29 June 2026 and subsequently extended to 13 July 2026, to collect data and information to support further analysis in the ESPR Preparatory Study on Furniture. The preparatory study follows the Methodology for Ecodesign of Energy-related Products (MEErP), which provides a structured framework based on seven tasks and has recently been expanded to include methodologies for non-energy-related products. This stakeholder consultation supported Tasks 1–4 of the MEErP by collecting feedback and data on:

• Scope of the product group
• Market structure
• User behaviour
• Technical features and life cycle of the product group

Information collected through this consultation is being used to support the analysis of the potential impacts of any implementing legislation measures on furniture (if any). Information provided may be cited in the final report, but will be anonymised (e.g. by stakeholder type). Market data will not be reproduced in a way that can be traced back to individual manufacturers (i.e. aggregated).
